Activity: Read the following text, do you agree with all the points made?
Information, data and media literacy is all about the skills, knowledge and understanding of how to search for, evaluate and use information. D3 looks at information in general but also how this is represented in media (text, images, video, and audio) and importantly in data form (numbers, charts, graphs, maps, statistics).
According to Fontichiaro and Oehrli (2016), data literacy is the ability to critically create, manipulate, manage, analyse, understand, and communicate data.
It is the ability to read, work with, analyse and argue with data in context, including an understanding of data sources and constructs, analytical methods and techniques applied — and the ability to describe the use case, application and resulting value.
Data literacy is about having an inquisitive mindset, empowering critical thought, making meaning from the data. It is highly relevant as a skill that empowers people to ask the right questions of data, make decisions and communicate information to others.
