Flood Risk Modelling

FloodMap is a flood risk tool from the United Nations, established to provide flood alerts / flood warnings.

FloodMap generates inundation maps for significant floods from1984 to the present using open Earth data. The tool applies a water classification algorithm to historical satellite imagery derived from Landsat to reveal inundation patterns over space and time.

Users can select areas of interest, set flood event durations, and view inundated areas. The FMT is a hindcast tool that allows impacts of inundation on various socio-economic sectors to be analyzed. citeturn0search2

FloodMap offers floodplain maps and floodline maps for streams and rivers as well as a 3D visualisation and flood simulation..

Activity: Use the AI-generated FloodMap Forecast Map to identify areas currently at risk from flooding.

A European Union flood prediction tool is the DiscoMap service, which provides an AI-generated flood risk viewer and flood data using European Environment Agency sources and their Floods Directive.

Activity: Try the DiscoMap service for your region. Which information sources does this AI generated system provide?
How does it compare with the information provided by FloodHub and FloodMap?
What important river characteristics/ hydrological parameters are not offered?

Consider the advantages of such AI tools for citizens. How might the information provided support local authorities in the decision-making processes of flood prevention and recovery from flooding.

Accurate flood forecasts enable timely warnings, allowing communities and authorities to implement measures to mitigate flood impacts on lives and property.

AI4Flood is an example of a recent cross-border innovation and collaboration project for the prevention, protection and preparedness against flood emergencies.
