AI Case Study: Deforestation

Combatting Deforestation in the Amazon

This module explores the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in monitoring and preventing deforestation in the Amazon rainforest (and broader deforestation worldwide).

The case study explains how geospatial technologies and AI contribute to detecting patterns, predicting deforestation risks, and informing conservation efforts. The Unit examines both the advantages (e.g., enhanced precision, scalability) and challenges (e.g., ethical concerns, data biases) of using AI in environmental contexts.

How Can AI Help?

One way AI can help identify deforestation is through Real-Time Monitoring Using Satellite Imagery.

AI algorithms can analyse vast amounts of satellite image data to detect changes in forest cover in real-time. This allows for rapid identification of deforestation activities, even in remote areas.

How It Works: Satellites capture high-resolution images of the Earth’s surface at regular intervals.
AI models, trained to recognize patterns of deforestation, analyze these images to identify changes such as tree loss, road construction, or illegal logging.
Alerts are sent to authorities or conservation organizations, enabling quick responses.

Examples:
Global Forest Watch: Use AI to monitor forests globally and provides near-real-time deforestation alerts.
Planet Labs: A company that uses satellite imagery and AI to track environmental changes, including deforestation.

Activity: Browse the websites and check how they work. How is AI being used in these applications?
How could you use Global Forest Watch in your teaching on deforestation or reforestation? Think about a useful assignment for your students.

Discussion Point: Why is real-time monitoring important for combating deforestation? (Hint: Think about the speed of illegal activities and the need for immediate action.).
